As part of the consortium working on the Horizon 2020 funded UTOFIA project, Odos Imaging has contributed advanced camera hardware.
By utilising range-gating and time-of-flight techniques to the underwater environment, the UTOFIA project aims to capture high-contrast images with the ability for 3D reconstruction. This technological foundation benefits end users with a wide range of applications, including automated measurement of fish growth, surveying and mapping of the seabed, and inspection of civil structures.
The early tests during deployment showed significant improvement of both contrast in turbid environments and 3D reconstruction. With range-gated operation the camera efficiently performed rejection of back scattered light within the first meter. The viewing range was improved by at least double in a side by side comparison with conventional cameras.
